It's easy to switch between Octopus editions and tiers. When you upgrade, we'll factor in your old license pro-rata. For example, if you were 6 months into a 12-month license, your upgrade would factor in the fees you have already paid on the remaining 6 months of your old license. To place an upgrade, contact sales for a quote.
No. If you're using a self-hosted instance of Octopus, you'll be able to activate a new license key without reinstalling the software and without losing any data. If you're using Octopus Cloud, once you convert your cloud instance to a paid plan your license will be updated automatically. You can convert or restore any cloud instance within 90 days of it being deactivated.
The Professional edition of Octopus is available as a 30 day free trial on our unlimited tier for any scenario, including production, commercial use. After the trial period ends you can keep your working configuration and upgrade to a paid license and continue deploying uninterrupted.

Octopus Cloud runs within the Microsoft Azure cloud. When you create an Octopus Cloud instance, we provision a Linux container to run the Octopus Server in, along with all the other resources we need to provide Octopus as a service. This is deployed to one of our Kubernetes clusters. A fun fact: we use Octopus Deploy, with our multi-tenancy functionality, to deploy your Octopus Deploy instance.
Our pricing model needs to evolve with industry trends. More and more companies are shifting away from traditional Windows and Linux application hosts to Cloud or Cloud hybrid models. We chose Projects, Tenants, and Agents as they best reflect the value Octopus Deploy provides.
No. We will NOT count the following against your license: Kubernetes Clusters, Azure Web Apps, Azure Functions, ACS Clusters, Azure Service Fabric Clusters, Azure AKS Clusters, AWS Lambdas, AWS ECS Clusters, AWS EKS Clusters, Elastic Beanstalk, Workers, or any other target that is NOT a Windows or Linux application host.
There are no other differences other than the number of units we count.
We realize this is a big change, as the previous per-target pricing has been around since late 2017. Right now, per-target pricing remains the default pricing model. We are offering this pricing model for customers who are moving away from traditional Windows and Linux application hosts to Cloud or Cloud Hybrid models. Once this new pricing model becomes the default, we will offer a transition plan to all our existing customers.
All existing licenses will be honored through the end of the license term. If your per-target license expires in 2026, you can continue to purchase additional targets through 2026. Once your license is up for renewal, reach out to sales@octopus.com or your account executive. They will help you navigate through the different decision points.
Per-target pricing is still the default pricing model for Octopus Cloud. Once our new pricing model becomes the default, we will offer a transition plan for all our existing month-to-month customers. You will be notified 60 days before the conversion.
