What was it like before Octopus?
We used TeamCity to deploy to our QA environments and manually deployed to our staging and production environments.
How was Octopus able to help?
Prior to implementing Octopus Deploy, we utilized TeamCity to deploy to our QA environments by directly uploading the build artifacts to the proper locations. We manually configured IIS to setup the web sites for each application we deployed. Staging and production deployments were to locked down environments and we didn't have confidence in allowing TeamCity to manage those deployments, so they were done manually by an operations person manually copying the artifacts to the machines or manually running SQL migrations. Octopus Deploy allowed us to eliminate all of the manual deployment steps from our software development life-cycle, saving us time and avoiding deployment errors. The intuitive interface allowed our QA team to take ownership of QA deployments, eliminating the need for a developer to mange them. The robust and secure communication channels of Octopus Deploy gave us confidence to allow it to deploy to our staging and production environments. Automating these processes has allowed us to move quicker and require less resources.
