John Bristowe

How did you get into your current job/field?

I’ve always been interested in technology. I was the kid that disassembled the family VCR to figure out how it worked. The digital clocks in our house NEVER flashed 12:00 because I made sure they were set properly.

I excelled at programming but never thought of it as a career. My father was/is a radiologist so I always believed I’d pursue a career in medicine. Once in university, I changed my major to Computer Science and never looked back. Best decision I could have made.

Since then, I’ve held numerous roles at various start-ups, Microsoft, and Telerik before landing a role at Octopus Deploy.

What's a fun fact about you that people may not know?

I play and referee ice hockey in Australia. I’m part of the crew that referees our top hockey league, the AIHL.

What is your favorite project you've worked on at Octopus Deploy so far?

I really enjoyed my time on the integrations team. We built out our first GitHub Actions, the Terraform Provider, and the new CLI that was built in Go.

Do you have any hobbies outside of work?

I enjoy tinkering on engines. Simple ones like lawnmowers and such are easy to fix.

What excites you most about working at Octopus Deploy?

I really enjoy telling our story to our audience through our live streams and videos we publish on social media.

If you could eat one meal for the rest of forever - what would it be?

Steak and potatoes. Without a doubt.

Is there anything else you'd love to share with us!?

Not my proudest accomplishment, but I’ve gotten really good at spreadsheet programming over the years. I think I could make a bid to enter the Excel Olympics.
