On March 1, 2019 we discontinued a number of old license tiers. Licenses sold under these discontinued tiers were named Professional, Team, Enterprise or High Availability. These licenses were sold up until late 2017, under an old licensing model that depended on the number of users, projects and machines. We continued to “grandfather” them and allowed them to be renewed up until March 1.
Since March 1, 2019, it is no longer possible to renew these grandfathered licenses. In 2018, we announced new pricing based solely on the number of targets. This page explains the reasons for the change, how the change was announced, and your options for upgrading.
Why did you discontinue these licenses?
We set these pricing tiers in 2015, when Octopus was based solely in Australia, with a small team and a product with far fewer features than it has now. These old pricing tiers were extremely generous, to the point that Octopus was significantly under-priced compared to any other release automation tool on the market.
Our team is now much larger, and we have support and customer success teams in the US and UK. Our engineering team is still by far the largest team at Octopus and we continue to invest in new functionality, performance, security and other improvements. We think our current prices reflect the value Octopus provides to teams.
Here's are just some of the features we've released since the pricing changed:
- A streamlined deployment process editor
- Jira integration and work item tracking
- Spaces, a way to better organize large Octopus servers
- Octopus Server on Linux (and Tentacle on Linux soon)
- Workers, a way to share the Octopus Server workload
- Deploy releases from another release
- Recurring scheduled deployments
- Script steps can reference multiple packages
- Deployment variable previews
- Azure support improved
- Azure Service Fabric cluster support
- GitHub feeds
- Terraform support
- Kubernetes support
- AWS support
- A lot of performance improvements
When was the change announced?
In November 2018 we announced we would be discontinuing these licenses. Your nominated billing and technical contact on the license key should have received an email in November 2018, as well as in January and February 2019. The email outlined the reasons for the change and instructions for customers that elected to renew their license before the license tiers were discontinued.
Pro, Team, Enterprise & HA
This section applies if your license tier was named Professional, Team, Enterprise or High Availability.
You can elect to stick with your current license. Your current license would have an expiry date - typically 12 months after it was purchased or previously renewed. You can install and run any version of Octopus that was released during your license maintenance period.
To use newer releases of Octopus, or to use the latest features, you will need to choose a new Server edition license to upgrade to. Octopus Server is licensed according to the number of targets.
As well as the new features highlighted above, Octopus Server edition also comes with some new features:
Pro, Team & Enterprise
|Spaces, a way to better organise your Octopus server by grouping your environments and projects by team||1||Unlimited||Unlimited|
|Workers, which makes it easier to speed up and scale out your Octopus Server||1||Unlimited||Unlimited|
|Octopus Server nodes, enabling Octopus to be highly available with multiple nodes||1||2 - 4||Unlimited|
Standard and Data Center
This section applies if your license tier was named Standard or Data Center.
On September 1, 2019 we simplified our model by merging these licenses into a single "Server" edition license. Your existing license can still be renewed, although there are some features that you may gain by switching to the new tier.
|Spaces, a way to better organise your Octopus server by grouping your environments and projects by team||3||Unlimited||Unlimited|
|Octopus Server nodes, enabling Octopus to be highly available with multiple nodes||1||Unlimited||Unlimited|
How do I know how many targets I need?
Octopus Server is licensed according to the number of deployment targets that you intend to manage. To decide which Octopus Server tier you need, you'll need to know the number of targets.
You or your Octopus administrator can find the number of targets you currently have by going to the Infrastructure tab, and looking for the number of targets.
In older versions of Octopus, go to the Environments tab.
